The Clooper Guide To Bermondsey

Lovingly titled a ‘foodies paradise’, Bermondsey stands strong among Central London as a town that has persevered through the ages.

You’ll have your pick of the bunch in terms of homes in this riverside district. Partially destroyed in WW2, Bermondsey has risen from the ashes to bring you colourful markets, diverse architecture and a strong community atmosphere.

A FOODIES PARADISE

Bermondsey has been dubbed a ‘foodies paradise’ due to its markets and popular restaurants. Its quintessential market ‘Malty Street Market’ is an outdoor street market operating on the weekends, home to over thirty fresh produce stalls. Not only this but there is a bounty of street food available also! So you can enjoy a fresh, delicious lunch while shopping around for ingredients for your fresh, delicious homemade dinner later. Double yum!

LOVELY LONDON VIEWS

The majority of homes in Bermondsey overlook the Thames, seeing as it is notably a riverside location. As well as this, you can also find yourself with fantastic views stretching out over Central London. Locals comment that their homes are graced with views of Tower Bridge, the Thames of course and also London Bridge. This means that iconic London buildings such as the Shard can also be viewed, and admired, from your doorstep. They’re also incredibly close in proximity! You could be out for a divine dinner in the Shard and not be too far from your nice warm bed at the end of it all.

PERFECT FOR PROFESSIONALS

As previously stated, Bermondsey is incredibly close to Central London. Major work areas like Canary Wharf and London Bridge being under thirty minutes away make this a popular choice to plot up home for many working London professionals. However, this district is far from haughty as its professional community may suggest. In fact, Bermondsey locals pride themselves on making everyone feel welcome. There is even a website available where locals organize events where you can get to meet your neighbours and find out more about the area. You can find out more here.

LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS

While, as with all of the areas in our area guides, Bermondsey does have its usual amenities of grocery stores and gyms, it also has a collection of unique attractions. Namely, restaurants and food retailers. We did some digging to find some local favourites for you, listed below:

  • Il Pirata, London, brings its customers high-quality Italian food and wine. The best part? They don’t rush you out after you’ve finished eating, so you can enjoy some wine and a chat after your meal.
  • Captain Kidd serves organic beers and is a popular meeting place for the locals.
  • La Grotta has won the hearts of many for its delicious ice creams and inventive frozen treats.
  • Of course, Maltby Street Market! Swing by every weekend for delectable street food and fabulously fresh produce. It’s also popular with locals, so you can socialize to your hearts content.
  • Bermondseys Fashion and Texture Museum is very popular among its artsy community base.
  • Southwark Park boasts a bandstand, cafe, art gallery and childrens play rarea. There are several smaller parks in and around Bermondsey, with Bermondsey Spa Gardens being particularly popular with families due to its numerous children’s facilities.
